Alphaworld

Alphaworld

Location: A-W System

Dominate Races: Common Races

Population: Approx. 36 million

Size: 429,025 sq. kilometers (class P27k planet)

Alphaworld is the first planet in the A-W System (Alpha meaning "first"). It is the largest known planet in astro-geographical records and also bears the largest population. It is a post-modern, anarchic, yet relatively peaceful world.

Alphaworld has a history of frequent asteroid collisions which is one of the root causes of its broken civilization. Despite this burden, its inhabitants fight for survival which allowed Alphaworld's technological level to advance quickly.

SW City is one of the few bastions of organized civilization. Most communities on the planet usually only form a temporary leadership before slipping into anarchy again.

1. Government

The only thing close to resembling a global government in Alphaworld is Circle of Fire Corporation which taxes "world citizens" for protection from outside forces. No payment, no protection. Because meteoroid activity is heavy in the A-W system, it is a generally reasonable fee. The corporation also kept a watchful eye over the Alphaworld Peacekeeping Authority until it dissolved on July 10, 2021.

2. Geography & Climate

Alphaworld is, relatively speaking, a simple planet. Besides the occasional hill or river, it is mostly just a flat, temperate grassland. Its planet-wide mono-climate is stable and most every day is the same as the last. Alphaworld only has two seasons - summer and a short winter.

Orbiting the planet endlessly are whispy cirrus clouds. Rain is rare in Alphaworld, but due to frequent high humidity conditions, water is returned to the ground via condensation (eg morning dew). Low profile plantlife such as sod have adapted to live off these trace amounts of water.

In other 'greener' parts of the world, usually where civilization can be found, plants tap their roots deep into the ground where its moist from local underground springs. Most buildings and cities are only constructed along the planetary veins where the springs reside.

Water tides ebb and flow back and forth throughout the veins, which is caused by Alphaworld's three moons. The major veins are located along the longitude and latitude equators, and roughly halfway between them, forming a web-like pattern. All veins conjoin at what is known as the planet's "Ground Zero".

Because of Ground Zero's significance, world navigation revolves around it. Ground zero is 0n 0w, and ascends outward from there with each unit representing 10 meters. Other planets have adopted this simple locational system, with their ground zeros bearing a similar importance.

3. Life in Alphaworld

Most inhabitants of Alphaworld construct newer dwellings near to other developed areas. Most civilization crowds around the planetary veins because they're used not only for drinking and food but also for hydro-power. Powerlines are rare and only constructed to create shared power zones which distribute power more reliably for those who pay for that luxury.

Common food sources include ranching and fishing. Farming in Alphaworld is rare by comparison, and most farm produce is targeted for the luxury food niche. Compared to other worlds, Alphaworld does not have very much variety in food, and because this, demands for new alternatives have driven demand for new technologies such as "lab ranches" like Genucon and concentrated hydroponic farms for non-indigenous flora.

4. The Time Travel Incident

In 2011, Governor Mikhail Alexeyev Dostovei of SW City launched an ICBM loaded with exotic matter and detonated it in orbit around Alphaworld in an attempt to open a wormhole to another part of the galaxy and establish trade for his corporation MadCorp. He ended up causing a major diplomatic incident instead.

Due to a misunderstanding with the trader he purchased the exotic matter from, a cousin of Dr. Chris who spoke an odd dialect of Lingarian, Dostovei ended up purchasing the wrong kind of exotic matter and the ICBM ended up boring a tunnel through time instead of space. The entire Alphaworld system was accidentally swallowed up and shot forward to the year 2026.

Dostovei was last seen fleeing toward Horizon City with an angry mob of Circle of Fire employees after him, for they had missed out on 15 years worth of stock options. SW City ended up paying reparations to those affected and officially apologized for the incident.
